Project Description
What is communication? Not its definition, but what it is physically. Communication can be received through waves: sound waves and light waves. The manifestation of waves as a form of communication can lead to a variety of interpretations within architecture. This design embraces this concept in its form and function, creating a contained space that both kids and adults can enjoy. It is an interactive sensory playground that applies the idea of the wave in its form and creates a series of spaces where different activities take place, from reading a book to jumping around with a friend. These activities are organized according to the amount of the movement, from passive to active, by which the spaces will react with light and sounds depending of the type of activity that it is occurring. This playground was though out so that children would have the opportunity, through integration, to interact and communicate with others.
In order to design a space that can function as a tool for autism, the following therapies were considered: the Irene Method and the importance of color, the TEACCH treatment with the necessity of a structured space, and the Sensory Integration Therapy, that promotes the need of physical exercise. Ondolux applies ideas taken from these autism therapies and uses them to create a sensorial integration module that can aid these therapeutic methods. Likewise, this space can be used by both kids and adults for other recreational purposes as well.
